This weekend I sat down and beta-tested the Football Chairman to see what needed to still be accomplished.
Without a save-game feature, I started as Bedford Wanderers (the default team, for no particular reason) and a job which gave me £10,000,000 from the outset, enough to keep the team out of debt in the first several years and to develop the stadium, to put Bedford on the fast track for the upper divisions.
As far as my game goes, Bedford made it from the Regional Conferences to the Premiership in about 15 seasons, though admittedly they were lucky to do so, going up through the playoffs. Relegation immediately beckoned, and it took a couple more seasons to head back into the Premiership, where they battle relegation every season but are slightly too good to go down.
Frustratingly, Chelsea won the season 3 Premiership. What was frustrating was that they won it having played 48 games, there being two bugs in the game - first, the game was scheduling them for two European games at the same time, and because you can't have two games in the same day the game would reschedule the other games as a league match. Also, the limit on the Premiership team's skills did not work (every season, it increased the top 7 team's skills based on the assumption that 10 is greater than 0), so by about season 10, the top 7 teams were scoring 5-10 goals a game on lesser opposition.
After 30 seasons of play, there are still a number of things that need to be worked on. First, I need to add to the number of events that arise, especially in the Premiership and Division One stages of the game, as these keep the game interesting. I've made events conditional as well. Secondly, the players available to buy in the latter stages of the game are too cheap and too weak, so I will have to adjust that accordingly. Thirdly, I have not added support for the manager yet, or the wage/transfer budget allocations, which should take some time. Also, the sponsors in the Premiership give you up to £25,000/week, which is not legitimate - there are not enough expenses, so I now have £200,000,000 in the bank and nothing to spend it on.
All of this adds up to more work than I anticipated, so don't expect the game out for another couple of weeks.
Remarkably, Barnet just climbed to the Premiership from the Division 3 in 6 seasons.
